HOW IT ALL BEGAN
This project was initially inspired by the saying “starting from scratch”, because that’s the wrong way of thinking about it. What we should’ve been doing is starting with what we have. Starting from scratch means starting all the way from the crop harvested to create the material that later becomes the garment in your wardrobe.
What happens when we wake up and we’ve wasted so much that there’s no resources left to “start from scratch”? This project intends to show how much you can do with what you already have, and using your creativity to make something completely new, with a different narrative.
To fully understand this problem, I challenged myself by acting as if I had no resources other than what was already in my closet. The first thing I did was I ripped open the lining of a tailoring jacket, and I put it inside out. Inside, there were layers of stitching, done completely by hand. The way I designed it, the jacket maintained it’s functionality while also showing the heart of the craft.
The world wastes approximately 92 million tons of textile waste every year. Through projects like this one, designers could turn around the fate of the world just by upcycling and using their full creativity and existing resources.
